Leader
Cup Report
SEMI-FINAL :
Patrickswell
N.S. 4-4
Croagh
N.S.
1-1
This
was a much closer match than the final score-line suggests. In the end, the
game was settled by two late Patrickswell goals. The half-time score was 2-1 to
0-1.
Neil
Byrnes was outstanding in defence, from start to finish. Adam Carrig dominated
at centre back and when he moved to midfield in the second half, he solved a
serious problem for his side. He cancelled Croagh's main threat, secured plenty
of good quality possession for his team--and even managed to notch up two vital
scores in the course of the game. Six different players scored for the Well,
including four different goal-scorers.
The

FINAL
:
Patrickswell
N.S. 0-8
Scoil
Dean Cussen, Bruff 1-4
This
was a tense and thrilling final, fitting of its billing as the County
Decider. Bruff had beaten the Well convincingly in a challenge match in
Bruff, earlier in the year and showed themselves to be an extremely skilful and
physically strong team when beating East champions, Doon CBS in the Leader Cup
semi-final.
The
final was not to be a one-sided affair. It ebbed and flowed, as the very best
matches do. The outcome was in the balance right up to the final whistle. Both
sides were desperate to be crowned county champions and every player did his
utmost to secure victory for his school. The Well defence thwarted their
opposite numbers brilliantly. Defenders are often forgotten when famous
victories are achieved but the heroics of the Patrickswell sextet (and
goalkeeper) who helped bring the Leader Cup to Patrickswell for the first time
ever should never be forgotten.
The
half-time score was: Patrickswell NS 0-3, Bruff 0-1
